James III "the Vindicator" of New Britannia was the tenth Monarch of New Britannia. Son of James II, James would rule in practice through his father's entire reign, succeeding him upon his death in 147 1ENB. His reign would ultimately entail a renewal of hostilities with the Britannian Empire, climaxing with New Britannian troops capturing Kandaria, the capital of the Britannian Empire and a series of barbarian invasion ravaging Britannian holdings. While Kandaria would nominally be restored to the Britannian Empire, it would remain occupied by New Britannian forces up until the end of the Britannian Empire's existence, when it would formally become a part of New Britannia. James, who had oversaw the capture of Kandaria personally, remained in the city for several years, even after it was nominally returned to Britannia. Eventually, in 154 1ENB, he would return to New Britannia to a hero's welcome. He would meet his end, however, when he and his son embarked on a campaign in the Laurentian Territories, which were, at the time, just beginning to be settled by New Britannians. Laurentia however, unlike any other territory that New Britannia had expanded into, had a native populace, who heavily resisted New Britannian settlement during this time frame. While traveling between settlements, James and his son were ambushed by the natives and were killed, with their scalps sent to Arevad as a warning to New Britannia. Their bodies would never be recovered. As a result of the death of his only son, James would be succeeded by his aged brother, Robert II.
